The Definitive Drucker by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim The Definitive Drucker
by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim

I’m often shocked by how many well read executives have never read anything by Peter Drucker. Other than Edwards Deming I can’t think of anyone who has had more impact on the Global Business landscape than Drucker. His ideas and management philosophies have been adopted and expanded by a who’s who of 21st century CEO’s. Even Winston Churchill praised Druckers first book “The End of Economic Man.” We at Weldcoa have based our core model around Druckers main belief that all great companies have a primary responsibility to serve their customers, to provide goods or services which the company exists to produce. Profit is not the primary goal but it is an essential condition for the company’s continual existence.

This book is Drucker’s last will and testament as it was published just prior to his passing in 2005.

Management Challenges in the 21st Century by Peter F. Drucker Management Challenges in the 21st Century
by Peter F. Drucker

Drucker has several core management philosophies and he’s adapted those philosophies to the changing commercial environment of the new millennium in this book.

The big message in this book is that most companies are being run on assumptions that no longer fit the reality of today’s business climate.  Companies that continue to run the way they did two decades ago are courting disaster. This book was published in 1999 but its ideas are still cutting-edge and revolutionary. Every day I base many of my decisions on the core philosophies found in Druckers writings.

Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days by Jay Conrad Levinson & Al Lautenslager Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days
by Jay Conrad Levinson & Al Lautenslager

I first read Guerrilla Marketing when I was 19 years old. I was working my way through college by working retail during the day and DJing at clubs, weddings, etc. on the weekend.  Even though my major was marketing and my minor was public relations, what I was learning in the classroom was not helping me market my business. When I brought this to the attention of one of my professors she recommended that I read Guerrilla Marketing.  I was literally never wanting for work again after reading this book. If you have a small budget or no budget this book is what you need. The authors have published several marketing books since the first one. This book is a condensed version of all of those books.

Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive: Outsell, Outmanage, Outmotivate, and Outnegotiate Your Competition by Harvey B. Mackay Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive: Outsell, Outmanage, Outmotivate, and Outnegotiate Your Competition
by Harvey B. Mackay

This book was given to me by my VP at MCI when I was fresh out of college. Though I’d worked in retail sales, I was not prepared for the demands and the discipline required for business to business corporate sales. Harvey McKay saved my career. Within a year I was promoted to acting sales manager and then eventually to sales manager. This book gives you the concepts and the tools to build what we today call a Customer Relations Management Database. Back then we called it our Rolodex and you could always tell how good a sales person was by how many Rolodexes they had on their desk. Even though the times and the technology has changed all business are still built one relationship at a time and those relationships have to be nourished in order to grow.

Winning by Jack Welch & Suzy Welch Winning
by Jack Welch & Suzy Welch

As a business owner you always try to keep up with the biz buzz so when Jack Welch became the CEO of the moment I read his book, “At any Cost” and hated it. It was essentially everything thing that I hated about big corporations. I learned very little but I was reminded why I had left the corporate world. Then came his second book “Jack” which after reading it seemed like the perfect title because I had been “Jacked” out of my money for the second time. So when he published “Winning” I did not buy it. My wife gave me the Audio CD for my birthday because the reviews had been good. It sat in my car for almost a year. One day I put it on and I listened while I drove to a GAWDA regional meeting. I have listened to this book three times since then and I’ll probably buy the book one of these days so that I can make notes in it. This is a great book for anyone at every level of a company. I cannot recommend it enough.

The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman The World is Flat
by Thomas Friedman

There is an old saying my dad use to tell me that made no sense to me when I was a kid. After doing some bone-headed maneuver my dad would sit me down and try to lay some logic on me and the benefit of his experience. My eyes would glaze over but I’d sit there quietly until he was done because my dad was a big man and he could have destroyed me with one breath. At the end of all of these little talks he would say, “You just don’t know what you don’t know.” Like I said, this made no sense to me back then. Well over time I learned, usually the hard way, most of those things that I didn’t know. The World is Flat is that kind of book. At the end I just could not believe that I didn’t know all of the things that were in that book. Many authors have since argued that the world is not flat but they are missing the point of this extraordinary book.

Wizard of Ads Trilogy by Roy H. Williams Wizard of Ads Trilogy
by Roy H. Williams

Writing bad advertising is easy. Writing clear, effective advertising that sells is difficult. How many times have you heard people talking about some great ad but they can’t remember what the ad was selling? How many bill boards do you pass on the way to work? Can you recall three of them? The Wizard of Ads does a very good job of illustrating examples that can steer you toward better advertising and better profitability. The ideas in these books can be applied to just about any business. The “Wizard of Ads” is the best of the series.
