Keep Your Truck Bodies in Spec. AND Your Loads Secure.

Weldcoa truck body gauges provide a simple, reliable way to verify pallet bay dimensions—helping prevent pallet movement and ensuring safe, consistent transport.

When you’re loading and moving cylinders every day, you need confidence that everything is going to hold the way it should. Truck body gauges give your team a simple way to check that pallet bays are in spec, so pallets lock in securely and stay that way during transport. It’s a fast check that supports safer handling and more consistent performance on the road.

Here is a short video demonstrating how the truck body gauges should be used and what key points to look out for.

PURPOSE OF TRUCK BODY GAUGES

Truck body gauges are used to verify that each pallet bay on a truck body is within proper dimensional specifications. These measurements are critical because:

  • Pallets lock into the truck body structure
  • Proper fit ensures secure transport
  • Out-of-spec conditions can lead to pallet movement or ejection

Maintaining these dimensions is essential for safety, reliability, and day-to-day operation.

Why This Matters

Weldcoa pallet systems are designed so that:

  • The pallet becomes part of the truck body when locked in
  • The system relies on tight dimensional tolerances

If dimensions are off:

  • Pallets may not fully engage
  • Locking mechanisms may fail
  • There is a real risk of pallet ejection during transport

Types of Gauges:

Each truck body gauge kit includes two tools. Each have simple visual differences make them easy to distinguish in the field. Both gauges are required to fully verify each pallet bay.

1. Lock Tube to Lock Tube Gauge
  • Measures distance between opposing lock tubes
  • Confirms proper spacing for pallet locking
  • Has a straight pin-to-pin design

2. Lock Tube to Center Tube Gauge
  • Identified by a half-moon cutout
  • Measures alignment between lock tube and center tube

When to Perform Inspections

This depends on your company's safety policies, but guidance is:

  • Frequency should align with:
    • Usage volume
    • Number of loads per day
    • Handling conditions
  • Conservative approach:
    • Periodic checks similar to a vehicle walk-around inspection
  • Practical approach:
    • Check after:
      • Visible impacts
      • Rough handling events
      • Unusual loading behavior

Over-checking every load may reduce operational efficiency without added value.

If a Bay is Out of Spec

Recommended Immediate Action:

  • Remove the affected bay or truck body from service

Recommended Next Steps:

  • Send to a qualified truck repair facility
  • Typically the same type of facility that repairs pallets

Important:

  • Do not continue using an out-of-spec bay
  • Weldcoa does not perform field rework

Common Causes of Damage

Out-of-spec conditions are typically caused by:

  • Forklift impact or misuse
  • Loading at incorrect angles
  • Excessive force during pallet placement
  • Repeated heavy use over time

Even though truck bodies are built for durability, improper handling can bend lock tubes and shift dimensions.

Truck body gauges are a simple tool with a critical role:

They ensure that pallets lock correctly, stay secure, and move safely down the road—protecting both your operation and the communities you serve.

  • Always verify fit before transport if damage is suspected
  • Do not force pallets into a bay
  • Treat any visible impact as a trigger for inspection
  • Follow all site and DOT safety practices
